Support For Ignacio
You deserve an experienced and proven Councilmember in District 5, one who answers tough questions, tackles difficult issues and makes tough choices. I have earned a reputation of integrity and action. That is why labor unions, elected officials, non-profit directors, neighborhood leaders, and business leaders all support my candidacy.

NATE MILEY, Alameda County Supervisor
I worked with Ignacio when I was on the Oakland City Council and I've worked with him now that I am a County Supervisor and Ignacio works just as hard now as he did back then, there's no question about it, he gets things done.

ALICE LAI-BITKER, Alameda County Supervisor
Ignacio is a tireless advocate for children's welfare. He has worked with me to secure funding for services and a safe house to help Oakland children who are being sexually exploited.

DAVID KAKISHIBA, President Oakland Board of Education
Igacio gets things done. We worked together to build three new schools in District 5 and he has consistently helped raise funds for afterschool programs for the children of his district.

DICK SPEES, Former Councilmember
The job of a City Councilmember is a tough one. Ignacio is not only a hard working Councilmember, he is an effective one. He gets things done and he does them well. We need his leadership on the Oakland City Council.

GILDA GONZALES, Executive Director, The Unity Council*
There's no question about Ignacio's committment to Oakland's working families. He works hard on their behalf and the changes he has made in this community are astounding.

Hayward Blake, Glenview Leader and Volunteer:
I have never seen any political figure work as hard as Ignacio. He walks the neighborhood walk and I will walk it with him.

Ramon Jimenez, Merchant District 5, Los Mexicaños Market:
As merchant in District 5, I have known Ignacio for over 16 years. Since the time I met him, I have regarded Ignacio as a true leader for the community. He has completed everything he has promised. It is very important for me and my business that we continue to have his leadership in office. He is a great friend to the community.

Sid Jimenez, Community Activist:
I support Ignacio de la Fuente's campaign for City Council for two simple reasons. First, I like and want more of the valuable, community-building assets Ignacio has helped bring home. For example, the Fruitvale Station Shopping Center, the Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School, and the Fruitvale Village, to name a few. Second, Ignacio has a proven track record. He is a well-respected, influential member of Oakland's legislature and that's the kind of decision maker I want representing my family's interests at City Hal.

Maria Sanchez, Community Activist:
I have lived in the Fruitvale for many years and for many years I did not know what the Council did for the Fruitvale District until Councilmember Ignacio de la Fuente was elected. Since then, the community has had great access to the council and our voice began to be heard. Ignacio has fought for bilingual services so the community could begin to express its opinions and actively begin to participate in city government. There have been many positive changes to the Fruitvale District since Ignacio was voted into office. Thanks to his hard work, we have begun to see the revitalization of Fruitvale. One of the many changes has been the construction of a new school in 2003, a new park on the edge of Bay in the Fruitvale area, the Fruitvale Transit Village, hundreds of new planted trees, closed down many problem bars, and many more importantly, the cooperation of various City departments along with many community groups to continue to make positive changes to the District. Fruitvale is becoming once again the district everyone wants to live inl.

Pat Ruelas, Community Activist/NCPC Chairperson:
My main reason for supporting Ignacio is he gets things done. He is really great at listening to his constituents and following up with to make sure the job gets done. For instance, the Fruitvale Gateway was really bad part of the neighborhood and he was instrumental in getting grant money.
He is extremely committed to the community and listens and follows through on what he promises. He is very good at working out solutions and not afraid and won't back down.

Agnes Ramirez-Grace, Community Activist:
I have lived in the Fruitvale District, in the same house, for over 40 years. I have known Ignacio since his first election. I was impressed that a Latino was running for City Council he has worked very hard for the Fruitvale area. He worked for a long time to build Cesar Chavez Elementary School along with a field to play. I remember when Montgomery-Wards was knocked down. The Transit Village took a lot of work but Ignacio was there, always working. Sometimes I think he works 24-7 to improve the district he represents. He is a hard worker, a doer and a fighter.

Tom Thurston, Ph.D, Central City East PAC:
I serve on the District 5 Community Development Block Grant Board and represent District 5 on the Central City East Redevelopment Project Area Committee. I support the re-election of Ignacio De La Fuente because he has a clear vision of the future and how to get there. He has a tremendous grasp of the details of city government. He understands that in a time of limited resources, we need to get more out of our tax dollar. That's why he promotes systems of accountability for city departments.

Ignacio is practical. He knows that you don't attract private development to Oakland by placing excessive burdens on developers. Much of what we want to see for Oakland—home ownership opportunities, restaurants, retail, good jobs—will be accomplished through the private sector. Developers need the public sector—safety, infrastructure, a school system that prepares good workers. Ignacio brings both sides together for Oakland's best interest.

Ignacio keeps in touch with the needs of District 5, regularly holding meetings both with leaders of community organizations and with business leaders. Ignacio's office has shown interest in the Boards on which I serve. However, he never tries to manipulate these boards for partisan purposes. Instead, he wants to confirm that the process is fair and open, and then respects our recommendations.

Beyond anything I can say, the Fruitvale neighborhood itself is a testimonial for Ignacio's re-election. Look at the changes over the past ten years. Representatives from other districts on the Redevelopment Committee see Fruitvale as a model of what they need to do.
